After discussing with the QOTO moderators we would like to nominate @khird as a new moderator.
It isn't official yet though, we want to give all of our users a chance to consider our nomination and vote either for or against. Also users are welcome and encouraged to nominate their own suggestions as well.
After about a week if no objections are raised and the support is positive with no opposing nominations to consider we will make the nomination real.
Lets hear from you!
Hi, wanted to let everyone know about a new type of group server on the #fediverse. It works the same as guppe automatically reboosting posts as a group actor. However unlike guppy it is managed, each group has an owner who can moderate and post to the group as well.
If anyone is interested checked out https://groups.qoto.org and feel free to register one or more groups there.
If you have any questions about how to use the group server or how it works you can post them to this group: @QOTO
QOTO, least blocked, best connected
’'’QOTO is one of the least block and most federated server in the fediverse. I wanted to share some of the data we have to know thats the case.’’’
The first thing to keep in mind is the only way you will ever find a server that no one blocks is if the server is new and no one knows about it yet. That means your messages wont make it into the Federated Timeline. So we want a server that is both established, and has a minimal number of blocks.
While there is no way to get a list of all servers that block your server there are several ways you can measure how well connected your server is which is an indication of your servers reputation in the greater fediverse.
the first and most telling measure is the peer count. The peer count are the number of servers that are aware of your server and federates with it. In other words it is the number of servers where your posts will show in their federated timeline, meaning they dont block you and at least one of their users follows one of our users.
The QOTO peer count is ~9,200 give or take 100. You can find this information in the following two places (each approximately agreeing with the other):
We can see how that rates us compared to other servers in the fediverse by pulling up the full list of servers above and sorting by peers. we see that out of ~4000 server QOTO ranks 24th most peers
The other way we can check is with a different measure called ‘'’insularity’’’. What this measures is how often people actually communicate across server lines with 100% meaning all communication is internal between users on a single server. So the closer to 0% we are the more servers we have communication with.
QOTO has an insularity of 17.2% which again is listed at the above link. There is no good way to rank this value, but if you look at all the other popular servers you will quickly see we have one of the best insurality values as well beating out even M.S.
Woat apparently the @QOTO group had a nice little boost of membership last night. Something like 25 new users joined the group.
Awesome to see the groups taking off, welcome!
If you moderate one of the groups at groups.qoto.org here is one useful tip.
You can add posts to the group by manually boosting them. Similarly posts made directly from the group account wont show in the group, if you wish for it to show in the group you must immediately boost your own post.
Just a heads up, the QOTO group server has been up and running without any problems for about a day and a half now. Looks like it is turning out to be pretty stable.
If you haven't already registered and reserved your group name feel free to do so here: https://groups.qoto.org
If you want some information on how it works and the rules, which you should do before signing up, see here: https://groups.qoto.org/about/more
Who to Thank for the Group Server
We released a lot of new features recently, most notably the managed groups server, groups directory, and markdown formatting in posts (see https://groups.qoto.org ).
A lot of people have asked if I coded it myself and I just wanted to take a minute to say while I did do the final leg of work ultimately needed to make these features possible, this is open-source, and therefore 99% of the work done was done by others, I am simply standing on their shoulders. Aside from a few days of work on my part try to remember people like @Gargron and @noellabo and the other mastodon contributors (sorry I don’t really know who all the main contributors are) are the ones who spent many months of their lives doing all the work that made what I did possible.
So while I appreciate the thanks for my part in this, if you really appreciate all the new features please don’t forget to thank the mastodon devs either, if it weren’t for them this wouldn’t be possible.
Welcome everyone to the QOTO group. If you have any questions about the moderation of this group please speak with @freemo
The fediverse’s first public Managed Group Server is live!
Sign up while all the good names are available *
Anyway, as far as I know this is the first time the fediverse has had an open, managed group server.
QOTO also has the group directory. Attached is what the group directory, and a group timeline looks like on QOTO, but we did some streamlining, your client may render groups differently and most wont have the directory, which is a federated list of active groups.
Anyway, anyone who wants a group, go sign up for one! Its open now!
Managed Groups Feature
YAY! I finally got the email confirmations working on the group server. that is the last of the bugs/features, it is now ready for opening to the public. Later today anyone interested in registering for a managed group can do so.
Only thing i have to do now is fill in the policies and about page, fix the headers on the load balancer to pass in the ip address and it will go live.
Stay tuned the server should be open for registration in about an hour. Hello managed groups fediverse!
A group for people to discuss general QOTO issues including discussing this group server.
The fediverse's first open managed group server.
